Batik is a traditional wax-resist dyeing technique that is used to apply patterns onto fabrics, either by drawing dotted lines of the resist with a spouted tool called ‘canting’, or by stamping a print repeat with a copper stamp called a ‘cap’. The applied wax keeps the dyes from bleeding into one another, thus allowing batik artisans to create diverse patterns with an array of vibrant colours and blends. This traditional method of batik making spans centuries, and is found in various countries, with diverse patterns cultivated by each country’s cultures. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition. The word batik originates from the Javanese “tik” and means “to dot”.
As a tribute to the beauty of batik, we’ve updated this ancient art form by using the fabrics to create fresh, contemporary accessories. Each of GIN & JACQIE’s batik accessories are handmade in Malaysia, making each one a unique piece.
